Mrs. Ogilvie lias returned to her flat at Courtville from a holiday visit to Christchurch. Mr. and Mrs. Preston Chambers have returned from a trip to Christchurch and the West Coast. Mr. and Mrs. 13. Twohill, Miss K. Twohill and Mrs. B. Strange, of Thames, are guests at the Itoyal Hotel. Mrs. W. Taylor and Miss Glory Taylor, of Epsom, who have been touring the North Island by motorcar, have now returned home. Major and Mrs. Nutsford, who have recently returned from Rarotonga, who have been staying with their daughter, Mrs. Alfred Anderson, at Northland, Wellington, will take up their residence in Auckland this week. A cable message has been received by the Hon. and Mrs. T. M. Wilford in Wellington from their daughter, Miss Isobel Wilford, of London, stating that she has been appointed understudy again to Miss Talullah Bankhead in a new play, and also that she has been given a small part in the play. Fun and Frolic at “The Chateau” GAY COSTUME BALL RUAPEHU SKIING CLUB j On Saturday night there was a j gathering of from 200 to 250 persons i at the annual ball of the Ruapehu Ski- ! ing Club, which was held in the lounge ! of the Chateau Tongariro. v The club had extended an invitation to all guests at the Chateau to the annual plain and fancy dress function, and there was a generous response. The .lounge was elaborately decorated, red and black streamers being prominent. Red and black are the colours of the club. For the benefit of non-dancers, cards were provided and comfortable lounges were scattered about the room. Many of the dresses showed much skill and originality and were the sub- i ject of very favourable comment from the onlookers. The floor was in very good condition and. had been carefully prepared for dancing. _ An excellent supper was provided and was done full justice to by all. Mr. R. Barnes, ►of Taumarunui, made an .efficient M.C., • and kept things going merrily. Credit j is due to the secretary of the club, Mr. Rennie, of Auckland, who had charge and organised the function. One of the outstanding features of the gathering was the splendid music supplied by the Peerless Orchestra of Ohakune. Undoubtedly the music helped materially to make the ball so successful and enjoyable. Luring the evening the prizes won at the annual sports were presented. Prizes were given for the jazz costumes among the club members and among the visitors. For the best fancy dress among the club members, Miss Eunice Merry (Spanish Senorita) was awarded the prize, and Miss McGregor (Witch), Miss J. McPherson (Dutch Girl), Miss McWilliams (Winter), were highly commended. Dr. E. B. Gunson (Kiltie) won the prize among the men club members, and Messrs. Cliff Beattie (Jester) and L. Whyte (Girl) were highly commended. For the most original costume among the members, Miss Farrelly (Maori) was given the prize, and Mrs. Woollams (Bon Bon) and Miss Brook Funnel) were highly commended. Mr. R. D. Rennie (The Human Wreck*) was awarded first prize among the men, and Messrs. Murie find Loretland (Guy Fawkes) were highly commended. Among the visitors the prize for the best fancy dress went to Miss IT. Hathely (White Bunny), and Misses Munt (Weary Willie) and Cammock (Harem Girl) were highly commended. The prize for the best fancy man’s dress was awarded to Mr. Stewart (The SheiJO, Messrs. R. Clare (Parson) and R. Kay (Departed Spirits) highly commended. The wedding party comprised the following:—Bride, Mr. J. Thorpe (Wellington); groom, Miss S. Dedman (Melbourne); bridesmaid, Mr. L. Whyte (Auckland); best man, Miss A. Deamen; parson, Mr. R.
