BIRKENHEAD BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Birkenhead Borough Council held its fortnightly meeting last evening, the Mayor, Mr. J. P. McPhail, presiding. . Cr. E. R. E. Moller wrote asking for six months’ leave of absence owing to ill-health. The application was granted. Permission was granted to the Society for the Protection of Women and Children to take up a street collection on Friday, September 27. Permission was also granted the Birkenhead School Committee to make a house-to-house canvass for funds for a dental clinic on Saturday, September 21. The Onehunga Borough Council wrote drawing attention to the large number of street collections which are held in Auckland and suburbs, and which it considers are too numerous. It asked for a representative to attend a conference on Monday, September to consider the question. The Mayor was chosen as »the council’s representative. A long discussion took place on the Urban Farm Bill, a cojjy of which the Mayor had received from Mr. H. G. R. Mason, M.P., and which will como before Parliament shortly. Cr. Kerruish thought the Bill would affect the Borough of Birkenhead more than any other district, as it is one of the largest boroughs in New Zealand with small farms. If these farms had reduced rates to pay, it would greatly affect the income of the borough. It was decided to leave the question with the Legal and Finance Committee.
