hurdles to prince lu SURPRISE (Special to THE SUIT/ WANGANUI, Today. The Wanganui Jockey Club’s spring meeting opened in fine weather today. The track was good and the attendance large. Results: MAIDEN RACE Of £175; 6 furlongs 2 JUGGLE, 8.0 1 f-NORVAL TEA, 7.7 2 J-WHENUATONGA, S.O 3 Scr.: Potoaform, Joyspear, Equitant. Won by three lengths, with one length between second and third. Time, 1.15. potoaform. Joyspear and Equitant we re the defections from the Maiden, paving a big field of 20 horses to go to the post. Roundelay £585, was made a firm favourite, from Juggle £302, with a substantial drop thereafter to Pat’s Boy £209. At the release of the tapes Norval Tea went to the front from Arrow Zone, Juggle, Tea Taster, Winlock, Pat’s Boy and Wbenuatonga, but rounding the top juggle ran up into second position and was with Norval Tea as they straightened up. Juggle had no difficulty in maintaining her position in the run to the judge’s box, winning from Nor' val Tea by three lengths, with a length separating Norval Tea and Whenuatonga. Then came Pat’s Boy. Roundelay, Winlock, Tea Taster and Arrow Zont. OKEHU HURDLES Of £22 5; 12 miles !—PRINCE LU, 9.8 1 ELYSIAN OR, 10.11 2 7AH WERA, 9.0 3 Scr.: Peshwa, Modern, Askari. Won b/ a length, with a neck between second aad third. Time, 3.13. In the Okehu Hurdles, Prince Lu £621 was backed to a short price, Elysianor £424 and Lady Gay £2OO being next in the betting order. When trie field was sent away on its mission Prince Lu went to the front from Ah Wen, Fine Acre, Elysianor and Beaumont, and they raced in that order into the straight and past the stands. Prince Lu being well clear of Ah Wera. Entering the back Novar made a forward move, to work ahead of Beaumont, and the order approaching the final fence Prince Lu. just ahead of Ah Wera, with Elysianor, Novar and Fine Acre in line. Although Elysianor came strongly over the final 50 yards he could not reach the favourite, Prince Lu prevailing by a clear length, with heads separating Ah Wera and Fine Acre from Elysianor, and N'ovar right up and ahead of Lady Gay, PUTIKI HACK Of £200; 1 mile 110 yards 11—MASHER, 7.0 1 4—BLACK MAIRE, 8.2 2 1— ROYAL BLACK, 8.8 3 Scr.: Balloon, Singer, Trig, Austerity. Won by two lengths, with three-quarters of a length between second and third. Time, 1.44 4-5. In the Putiki Hack Handicap there was a field of 14 runners, in which Royal Black £482 was preferred to Tourist £412 and Desert Lad £397. Going away from home Kiriana and Desert Lad raced to the front from Black Maire and Masher, but approaching the back straight Black Maire deposed Desert Lad. with Masher, Arrowhead, Metellus, Tigrano and Warflame next. Half a mile from home Desert Lad commenced to drift steadily back, while Arrowhead had moved forward, but Black Maire was still showing the way to Masher. Metellus and Royal Black as they straightened out for home. The leader failed to stay on, Masher drawing away to win by two lengths, although Black Maire held off Royal Black by three-parts of a length. There was a short gap to Arrowhead. Tourist, Metellus, Calithe, Shrewd and Corwen. The winner paid a big price. SEAFIELD HANDICAP Of £225; 7 furlongs 3 HAVERING, 7.11 1 8— KICK OFF, 7.13 2 2- 10.2 3 Scr.: Royal Game. Won by two lengths with a head between second and third. Time, 1.31 3-5. There was good wagering on the Seafield Handicap. Gold Cure £656 and Reremoana £626 headed the market, although Havering £431 came in for fair support. Partaga was a little diffident at going into the barrier, and when the tapes were lifted he and Rouex, who were on the extreme outride, missed the jump out. Quilfire, from No. 1 position, was smartest to begin, and he led ReremocflUa, Haverjng, Lyn I)hu (late Glyn Dhu), Gold {ure and Rameses into the back straight. Rounding the turn for home Gold Cure had taken charge from Havering, Quilfire. Reremoana, Glenstar, Rameses and Kick Off, but with heads straightened out Havering went to the front from Reremoana and Gold Lure, while Kick Off was on the outside, also putting in a claim. The ™teran .finished full of running, but while he got up in time to head off Reremoana and Gold Cure, Havering still two lengths clear at the »ost. After Gold Cure came Rameses, High Fault!-' aQd Star Area. WANGANUI GUIINEAS Of £500; 1 mile .[—EAGLET, 8.5 1 rS ) , MmAL brake. 8.10 2 SCENT, 8.5 3 AU started. Won by a length, with 144 * >€tween second and third. Time, Only four runners paraded for the wanganui Guineas. Eaglet £686 was down to a very short price. Admiral Drake £3Ol, being preferred oMy Own £194. Admiral Drake and led False Scent and My Own jf l *®*? B the top and into the back. They acea in that order to the turn for nome, where Admiral Drake, who had 8 rails, gained a slight advantage , the favourite, and the Chief !
