PUBLIC AID SOUGHT

FUNDS FOR THE SAILORS’ HOME IMPROVEMENT SCHEME Contributions from the public are to be asked to provide funds to complete the plan of repairs to the Sailors’ Home. At its meeting last evening, the council of the home reached the decision. The Mayoress, M,rs. A. D. Campbell, will be written to to obtain her assistance in the organisation of an appeal solely for the home, or in conjunction with other appeals. The president, Mr. G. AY. Sanders, explained the immediate need for funds, and detailed the scheme of improvements still in hand. Plastering on the walls required improvement, and the ceilings were in a state of disrepair. The roof needed mending, and the ca.rrying-out of the plan would be largely dependent on the generosity of the public. Mr. Sanders made further reference to the negotiations with the committee of the Missions to Seamen concerning the site for the institute’s new hall. Efforts were being made to bring the negotiations to a head. In the building it was intended to lodge plates to the memory of people who had bequeathed sums to the home. These amounts, Mr. Sanders continued, reached £4,650, apart from the original bequest in ISB4 of £12,150, made by Mr. E. Costley for the erection of the building. Eighty new books have been added to the library, and arrangements are to be made for the introduction of popular magazines.
