CONFISCATED LANDS

COMPENSATION OFFERS TO MAORIS SUGGESTED ANNUITIES (THE SUN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Tues. Brief mention of the settlement of the claims regarding the recommendations of the Confiscated Native Lands Commission was made in the House of Representatives today by the Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana Ngata. On behalf of the Government, said the Minister, he had offered £5,000 a year in settlement of the Wairoa and Bay of Plenty claims. The offer had been accepted. A similar offer was made to Taranaki natives, but. a conference decided that £IO,OOO would be more appropriate, although it was stated that the tribes concerned were prepared to accept £5,000. Referring to the Waikato claims, the Minister said that a similar proposition was made, but a conference had to be held to determine whether monetary compensation would be acceptable, and if £5,000 would be sufficient.
