KING COUNTRY JOTTINGS Tlie Misses M. and A. O’Brien were tendered farewell functions prior to their departure from Taumarunui, the attendances •testifying to the popularity of the guests. A farewell evening organised by the Taumarunui Tennis Club, and other friends, welcomed both, young ladies as the honoured guests. Music for the dancing was provided by Miss Bolland, and Miss M. O’Brien gave several extras. A dainty supper was served, at the conclusion of which Mr. K. White, speaking for the gathering, presented each of the guests with a cut glass powder bowl, inlaid with mother-of-pearl. Both guests made appropriate replies. The Public Works Department staff gathered to bid farewell to Miss A. O’Brien, who has been transferred to the Lands and Survey Department, Auckland. The resident engineer, Mr. A. W. Albertson, presided, and after referring to the guest's popularity, asked her to accept a gold watch as a. mark of the staff's esteem. Messrs. tieddon-llills and Italliday also spoke. A “country ball” organised by the Taringamotu section of the women's division of the Farmers’ Enion (Taumarunui Centre) was well patronised, and the excellently arranged function provided a pleasant outing for the many guests. The music was supplied by Misses Hawsen, Jefferson, Avery, McCullough, and Messrs. A. Congdon and Plank. During the evening items were contributed by Miss Avery, Miss Hawsen playing the accompaniments. Miss B. Jefferson and Mr. Johnstone won the spot waltz. Miss McCullough and Mr. Plank the Monte Carlo. Mr. McCullough won a cake competition, and put liis trophy up for “Dutch auction” in aid of the funds. Mrs. McLennan and Mr. Rennie won a goose. The success of the event was mainly due to the organising ability of the divisional representatives, Mesdames Coogan and F. Gemmell. B « • The Raurimu Hall committee's plain and fancy dress ball was a great success. In a beautifully decorated building, a large crowd of merrymakers enjoyed the excellent music supplied by
r the Star Orchestra., of Taumarunui, M.r. Wm. McNamara being M.C. Extras were played by Mrs. McNamara, Mr. Henderson, and Mr. Fiveaslie. The competitive events were us follow: Monte Carlo dance, Mrs. McDurney and Mr. S. Dobbs; spot waltz, Miss Burnett and Mr. Joy; balloon dance, Miss V. Merry and Mr. Scott: cake-guess-ing. Mrs. J. W. Hutson: costumes, Miss Murray, Miss Rees, and Master D. Kendall (dressed as the Three Bears). The judges were Miss O’Donnell, Mrs. Glynn, and Mr. Duxfield. A delightful evening was held in the Ngakonui Schoolhouse, Taringamotu, when the residents gathered to welcome Mr. and Mrs. H. Moran, who were recently married. The guests were both given a most cordial re-
ception, and received numerous useful and ornamental presents. Mr. Moran expressed the appreciation felt by himself and his wife for the warm reception given them. Miss Freda Bishara was the guest at a kicthen evening held in the Theatre Royal annexe, Taumarunui, the hosts being Mrs. Ginders and Mr. and Mrs. A. Smith. Dance music was supplied by a special orchestra consisting of Mrs. McKay, Messrs. Slattery, McKenzie and Richards. A number of the guests gave items. Prior to closing, Mr. G. Trayhurn thanked the promoters, on behalf of those present, for the highly delightful evening. Miss Bishara was the recipient of many gifts. * * * The Tunanui weekly euchre tourney resulted: —Women’s prize, donated by Mrs. R. Gardiner, Taumarunui, won by Mrs. A. Anderson: men’s prize, won by the donor, Mr. S. Taylor. The Raurimu euchre tournament saw Mrs. A. Kay lor the winner of the women’s prize, donated by Mr. Broughton, and Mr. F. Climo the winner of the men’s trophy, donated by Mr. T. McDonald. A pleasant event took place at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. A. M. Hamilton, Sunshine Town, Taumarunui, when many friends gathered to bid farewell to Mrs. K. C. Reynolds, prior to her departure for Hamilton. Music and cards were enjoyed by the guests, and at an appropriate interval Mrs. Reynolds was presented with a handsome copper jardiniere with two small vases to match. Mrs. Reynolds succeeded in winning the “500” contest. Mr. William Thomas, who has been secondary assistant of the Taumarunui District High School for a number of years, has accepted a similar position with the Levin High School, and will take up his duties at that centre at the beginning of October. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas will be greatly missed from this district, both having become- very popular with all who knew them. As an educationist, Mr. Thomas has been very successful, and the results obtained in his department at the school examinations have always been of a very high standard.
