NEW REGENT
“THE IDLE RICH” Take an American family, an average family in an average American city home, a flat, say, and inject a love affair between a pretty stenographer daughter and her millionaire employer, and you have the ingredients for a great play success. All you need is a great cast and a director like "William de Mille to complete the formula. Striking proof of this may be had at the New Regent Theatre, where “The Idle Rich/’ Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s lilmisation of the noted stage success, “White Collars,” is the at- : traction. Directed by de Mille, the story, a I vivid cross section of American family j ufe in a big city, is literally crammed J with laughs, romance and heart in- ; terest. Conrad Nagel, of the famous ; speaking voice, plays the young mil- j lionaire, with Leila Hyams, who played : with William Haines in “Alias Jimmy j A alentine,” again in a talking role. She i is very beautiful and a clever little j actress as well. Bessie Love, of j “Broadway Melody” fame, as the flapperish little sister, is one of the i brightest spots of a very clever show. ' and character honours go to that splendid pair of stage and screen artists. James Neill and Edythe Chapman. who play the father and mother. Robert Ober as the radical cousin. Paul Kruger and other clever players are adequately cast. The specially selected short talkies include songs by the Keller Sisters, comedy songs at the piano by Van and Sc-henck, the well-known comedians, dialogue and songs by Gordon and Squires, a popular vaudeville team, items by “Ukulele Ike.” and a Pathe Sound News. In addition. Arthur G. Frost plays selections on the AVurlitzer organ.
