TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

AUCKLAND TITLES AT XMAS TOURNEY HANDICAP MATCHES Auckland tennis championships will be held during the Christmas holidays this year. The championships will commence on Boxing Day, December 26, and will continue the following day. A handicap tourney is to be conducted at the same time, and will start on December 28, or as soon as the courts are vacant. HpHIS change in the date of the championship tournament from the Anniversary Day, January 29, was decided upon by the Auckland Dawn Tennis Association last evening. The plan was discussed at. length, the concensus of opinion being that by adhering to the Anniversary Day for the coming season’s championships, there was every possibility of the tourney clashing with the Dominion titles fixture, tentatively arranged for late in January. The association took into consideration the prospects of a number of the best players being absent on holiday, but it was generally agreed, that the association must provide some tournament play for visitors. The prospects of a good “gate” at the Christmas tournament were also weighed in the decision. A proposal to adhere to the usual date for the championships and conduct a handicap tournament only at Christmas was heavily outvoted. The association decided to instruct its delegates to the New Zealand Council to oppose the application by the New Zealand Catholic Association in Wellington for affiliation with the Dominion body. The opinion was expressed that it was undesirable to have such sub-associations developing and that these organisations should affiliate with the district associations. Affiliation was granted to the Ellerslie Parish Club. Advice was received that under the amended rules of the New Zealand Association, Auckland was entitled to nine delegates who were entitled to exercise 4,112 votes. This provoked some discussion on the advisability of this association appointing its full quota of delegates, but it was decided to obtain further information. A miniature of the Daisy Udy trophy for the girls’ singles championship under 21 is, in future, to be presented to the winner. The inter-club committee was elected as under: Messrs. A. Goldie, H. Clay, F. O. Ellis, Ingram, J. Robb.
