FALSE SCENT IMPRESSiVE PELLETTE DOING WELL (Special to THE SVX) WANGANUI. Tuesday. ! The weather was fine for training operations on the Wanganui tracks this morning, though a cold wind was blowing during the early stages ol : the morning’s work. The first gallop done, and what may be considered one of the most illuminating of the morning, was that in which False Scent (A. G. Murray), Talisker (B. H. Morris) and Star Stranger participated, finishing in that order. Star Stranger was slow to move away, and soon the other pair had a break on him. The first furlong took them 12 2-5, and 25 was broken for the quarter, False Scent passing the post a couple of lengths ahead of Talisker, with the watch recording 1.15 3-5 for the journey, while Star Stranger, finishing strongly, was several lengths further back. Promising Maiden It was certainly a most satisfactory gallop, for it at once disposed of the idea that the Wanganui Guineas would be a one-horse race. False Scent was running on at the finish, and gave indications that he would be found going on with it in the classic race on the opening day of the Wanganui fixture. Talisker's time for the distance would be about 1.16, or a little more. This was satisfactory enough to those who favour his chances in the Marangai Handicap. Old Star Stranger could not foot it with liis young opponents, but is progressing well in his efforts. Cylinder (Limond—Cymene) was partnered with Ivnightlike in a spurt over three furlongs, which the pair left, behind in 37 4-5, after taking a tick under 13 for the first furlong. At present it is indefinite whether or not Knightlike will be a contestant in the Putiki Hack. If he is started A. G. Murray may have the ride. Count Palatine finished a little ahead of Love Song (Hunting Song— Mandoline) and the Grandcourt — Orozino juvenile in W. H. Dwyer's stable, at the end of three furlongs, which took 37 3-5, constituting a very satisfactory gallop. Likely Three-Year-Olds One of the smartest gallops over half a mile was that recorded by First Money and Trig, the pair cutting out four furlongs in 49 2-5, the quarter taking 24 1-5. . First Money has only a light-weight (7.7) in the Flying Handicap on Thursday, while Trig is on the minimum in the Putiki Hack. Ex Dono and Duellona finished together at the end of four furlongs, which took them 50, both moving freely. Warflame and Royal Game covered six furlongs in 1.17, taking 25 over the initial quarter, and 50 for the four furlongs. Warflame was doing it well. Air Laddie was not pushed to cover I six 'furlongs in 1.20 by himself. Pellette Goes Fast Nothing galloped faster than Pellette, who was sent along over four furlongs, registering 23 4-5 for the first two furlongs and doing 47 4-5 for the half-mile. This three-year-old is very fast over a short distance, but has not done himself justice on the trip. At Marton he was still off his feed, and is now just beginning to brighten up. He should have a good chance in the Durie Hack on his showing in this gallop. Foot Rule hit out freely over three furlongs, biit was not timed. Three of Sid Reid’s two-year-olds were sent over three furlongs, the trio taking things easily for Eminent, who finished first, to record 38 3-5 for the journey, with the other pair, Lineage and Appeal, not far away. Eminent is a nice sort, by Leighton out of Exclusive. Several others were allotted useful tasks, including Prince Humphrey. My Own moved nicely in serviceable work, and may gallop tomorrow morning. Two Maiden Candidates After the breakfast interval Whenuatonga (W. H. Jones), Auctioneer (.T. Barry), and Star Area (light-weight) were associated in a bout over five furlongs, taking 1.3 for the distance, with Whenuatonga finishing in front of the other pair. The grey looks improved by bis outing at Marton. and should not be long now making bis owner some return from his investment. Auctioneer also may be held to have run very pleasingly, and. with a .race or two into him, he should be well in the limelight. Norval Tea got to the end of five furlongs in 1.5, the first quarter taking Tenterden (Chief Ruler—Rosellate), in Moroney's stable, pleased the critics by the way he revelled in his task over two furlongs, accompanied by Recant (Cape Horn —Retraction). Several others were allotted strong pacework. Tho Fordell mentor, Fred Tilley, arrived in town this afternoon with Cashier, Consent, .Laughing Prince, Metellus, High Falutin’, and Gleiiartney. The last-named is not engaged on Thursday, but will be a runner on Saturdaj r . Was at Takaninl Judged on his two outings at Trentham. Brilliant Light had improved since leaving Auckland. He won on the middle day of the Wellington meeting and was unlucky on the final day. He is to make his next outing in the Durie Hack at Wanganui, and if he can repeat his form of a couple of months ago he must go close to a winning bracket. In this same race there are a couple of other likely Awapunitrained candidates in Lucky Bag and Blue Paper, not to mention Some Acre, Royal Lineage, Zarene and Pellette. I Consistent Black Mint ran two honest races at j Marton last week, and he may be found \ equally as conspicuous at Wanganui. He figures on 7.7 in the Marangai Handicap, and as he has proved his ability to handle the turns on this course, he should not be overlooked. He is a bigframed gelding, but he adapts himself well to these circular tracks. His two , seconds to Barometer at Martin showed ! that he is in excellent shape, and as j these performances were registered j after the appearance of the handicaps j he is that much up on the handicap - per. He will be coupled with Royal : Game, although the latter also claims i an earlier engagement. In and Out After pushing Eaglet fairly hard in ; the Marton sprint last week. Blimp was j a rank disappointment when tried out ' in the middle distance handicap the j following day, although the totalisator : indicated that he would win, for he j wound up a better favourite than Bar- j ometer. Blimp figures in the Maran- j gai Handicap, and if he takes it into j his head and does not get too in- i dated, he may make amends. Ifo\v- j ever, it is against him as a betting ; proposition that he is not over-reli- J able.

Condition May Tell It. is a select sprint field that has paid up for the Wanganui Flying: Handicap. But. as in the Marangai Handicap, it is really a question of what horses are ready for the fray, racing fit through having plenty of outings at the winter meetings. On this score alone Kaiti should be an easy winner, for he had three races at Trentham in July, three more at Riccarton a month ago. and one at Hastings (a winning bracket too) last Saturday fortnight. He is reasonably treated at Wanganui with 7.12, but in the past he has not done well on that course.
