MORE MEN FOR WESTERN i SPRINGS STADIUM “CONFIDENT OF GETTING LOAN” In anticipation of the immediate i placing of men on unemployment re- ; lief work the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildou, accompanied by Mr. J. S. Brigham and Mr. J. Tyler, this morning in- | spected the new municipal stadium ; which is at present under construc- | tion at the Western Springs. At the conclusion, of the morning's • extensive inspection, Mr. Baildon an- ! nounced that various new develop- | ments in the works would be started | immediately. This included the j erection of the approach gates and | ticket boxes and the construction of j parking areas on both sides of the ! drive. Along the creek which bord- ! ers the ground on the far side it is | proposed to build a rockery. The j terraces have been completed. “So far we have not made provision : for the erection of a grandstand, but | that will probably come later,” said ! Mr. Baildon. WORK FOR 160 MEN The City Council’s proposal to raise i £25,200 for unemployment relief will j be dealt with in Wellington today by j the Local Government Loans Board, ; and once the necessary information is ! received the council will be prepared ! to start immediately on the various ! relief schemes. j “We have given instructions for the | new work at the Western Springs ; stadium to go right ahead, and if i we do not get the loan I suppose we | will have to have another think,” said j Mr. Baildon, “but I feel absolutely con* : fident that we are going to get it. and I am expecting to receive word some j time this afternoon.” j It is expected that over 160 will be

employed on the various works, and the stadium scheme should absorb about 50, as compared with about 12 who were working: there this morning:. The Marine Department has approved ! of the extension of the waterfront j road to Mission Bay. and this will provide work for about SO men. while the Orakei Bridge will provide employment for about 30 men and a ■ number can also be employed com- : pleting the new railway bridge at 1 Gladstone Road.
