“NO INDUSTRIAL PEACE”

HOSTILE MOTION IN TRADES CONGRESS CONFERENCES DEFENDED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) LONDON, Friday. The delegates to the Trades Union Congress at Belfast debated the Moiid-Tui-ner conferences upon the following resolution:—“That this congress declares its opposition to the false cry of industrial peace and the policy of collaboration with the enemies of Labour who are ruthlessly attacking the standard of living of the working classes, while conferring with the General Council: and it instructs the council to end the conferences forthwith.” After Mr. E. Bevin (Transport Workers) had strongly defended the conferences the resolution was rejected by a large majoi'ity. The “Daily Herald” says it agrees with Mr. Bcvin’s remark that trade unionism cannot stop at a mere discussion of wages. The “Herald” continues: —’“The trades union leaders ai-e as good as the employers’ leaders any day of the week, and are just as capable of holding their own. “The recommendations of the congress upon the trades unions’ recognition of victimisation, and upon conciliation boards and unemployment, represent a substantial victory for trades union principles. “The Mond-Turner conferences are only a stepping-stone to a wider and more representative form of organisation. It now l'ests with the employers’ organisations to decide whether the proposals shall be treated as scraps of paper.”
