MAORI ARCHDEACON

FIRST TO HOLD POSITION (F'rom O.tr Own Correspondent) HUNTLY, Today. The first Maori archdeacon, Archdeacon Raiti, will be installed by Bishop Cherrington at St. Peter’s Cathedral, Hamilton, on September 29. Born at Mangonui in IS7S. a son of the late Mr. Wiremu Raiti, native constable of that settlement, the archdeacon of the Tai Hauauru (Western seat) received his early education at the public school there and his theological training at Te Rau College, Gisborne. He was ordained priest in 1913 by Archbishop Averill in St. Mary’s Cathedral. Auckland. Perhaps no native in the Waikato is more conscious of the honour conferred on the Maori race than “King” Rata Mahuta. who chose the title “Tai Hauauru.”
