Frank Tait Champions Stage Against Talkies
Melbourne newspapers have prominently featured the reply of Frank Tait, a managing director of J. C. Williamson, Ltd to the statement, made in Sydney by Stanley S. Crick, publicity manager for Paramount Films, that in 12 months motion pictures would be the only entertainment. Mr. Tait said: “Mr. Crick is very wide of the mark; there will be always be different classes of entertainment — legitimate productio?is, talkie films, concerts and orchestras.” He added that “The Desert Song” had broken all records in Sydney and Melbourne, “Show Boat” was well on the way to a similar achievement. “Brewster’s Millions ” a 20-year-old revival, had increased the second week receipts r fo per cent, above the opening in Sydney. Mr. Tait claimed that “Brewster’s Millions” first xoeek returns were as good as, if not better than those of most picture houses in Sydney , with the possible exception of two.
