DEPUTATION TO MAYOR
UNEMPLOYED IN PALMERSTON MESSAGE TO PRIME MINISTER Press Association PALMERSTON N., Friday. A surprise deputation waited on the Mayor, Mr. A. J. Graham, seeking an assurance that work would be provided for unemployed, it being stated that some were not far off starving. The Mayor intimated that he would do his best to alleviate the position and forwarded the following message to the Prime Minister and the Minister of Public Works: “About thirty unemployed waited on me this morning soliciting work. It is impossible for the borough to relieve the situation to any great extent. A large number of men has been discharged by the Manawatu County, and it is understood that there are more to follow. Can you give instructions for the recommencement of 'road work in the Manawatu County, which will provide work for a large number of men? For some months the position has been acute and many men are on the verge of starvation.”
