SCHNEIDER CUP SCARE

ITALIAN PLANE LISTS ALARMINGLY TEAMS FOR GREAT RACE (Australian and X.Z. Press AssociationJ (United Service) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Thurs. The Italian Schneider Cup competitors had another scare at Calshot. Captain Dalmolin took up a Macclii world-record speed plane, and alighted with a most alarming list. He climbed to the opposite float, and averted an overturning of the machine, which appeared to be imminent. Captain Dalmolin discovered that the starboard float had been damaged by coming into contact with some floating object. The Italians are determined not to lose the world’s air speed record, even if they cannot win the coming contest. As the corners of the course are regarded as too dangerous for Italy’s Savoia double-engined machine and so-called “egg planes,” these may be used after the race in an effort to attain the world’s record for a straight mile. In case of crashes on Saturday the Admiralty will provide boats with divers and diving apparatus. The official Schneider Cup teams are: —■ BRITAIN Waghorn, Supermarine Rolls-Royce S 6. D’Arcy Greig, Supermarine-Napier 55. D. F. W. Atcherley, Supermarine 56. Reserves —Two Gloster-Napier sixes, with Stainforth as pilot. ITALY Dalmolin, Macchi 52. Cadringher, Macchi 67. Monti, Macchi 67. Reserves.—Macchi 52, pilots Agello and Canaveri. Saturday’s race will cover 218£ miles, which is seven circuits of the Solent course. The competitors will start at 20minute intervals. Pilots must approach the starting-point at a height not greater than I,oooft, and cross it at a height not greater than 500 ft. A British plane leads off, followed by an Italian, then a British, and so on. The starting signal will be a gun fired from a warship. After the firing of the gun, each competitor will be allowed 15 minutes in which to cross the line.
