Soccer Knockouts

SEVEN FALCON CUP TIES Seniors Meet Junior Clubs WITH the first round proper of the Falcon Cup competition in full swing tomorrow, there is a big programme of seven knockout bouts to be cleaned up. Philomel has defaulted to Thistle and the early game at Blandford Park will be the tie between Manurewa and Nortlicote. In the second knockout Tramways meets Corinthians, a lively junior team which should keep the champion club busy in a vigorous game. Shore and Belmont at Devonport is the only clash between senior clubs and should be a keen game.

It is much to be regretted that Philomel will not field a team tomorrow to meet its engagement with Thistle in the Falcon Cup, but the ManurewaNorthcote knock-out should provide an exceptionally lively curtain-raiser between the two best knock-out combinations in the senior B division. Trams, on paper, may appear to have Corinthians at their mercy, but cun-ties the world over are always uncertain till the last whistle blows. Trams will probably not be able to field full strength against Corinthians. Fyvie’s injury in Wednesday night’s game being more serious than was expected. Corinthians comprise a dashing team of colts of the type to extend the champions in a lively knock-out. Another bout of unusual interest will be the tie at Devonport, where a Soccer Derby will be run off between Shore and Belmont. Belmont was the unlucky winner of the booby prize in the senior championship, with Shore as “runner-down.” and the knock-out should be an exciting contest. If Shore can produce the same form and enlist the lively assistance of the same “mascots.” as enabled it to beat Onehunga at the Manukau ground , in the senior cup. it should prove too strong for Belmont. Y.M.C.A. appears to have Tamaki beaten, and Bon Accord on present form should be superior to Newmarket. Metropolitan has only an outside chance in meeting Onehunga on its home ground, but Rangers v. Celtic sounds like an extra special item on the menu, though it is not the same Glasgow fixture which regularly draws about 100.000 spectators. Celtic has been weakening lately and if not at full strength, the lively juniors may spring a surprise on the senior club Senior A Grade Onehunsa. —Zuill, Mellor, Peterson. Woodhall. Bentley. JUNIOR NOTES AU nine of the senior B clubs will be engaged in the Falcon Cup knockouts tomorrow, and some of them must pass into the second round after meeting each other. However, most interest will be centred in the clashes between the junior and senior clubs, as those games will provide a strenuous trial of strength between the upper and lower divisions, and afford a good comparison of the standard between the two grades. It will not be surprising to find some of the junior combinations pressing their seniors hard in a desperate go for the knock-out points. SECOND GRADE Dacre Memorial Cup.—These knockouts provided some interesting clashes last Saturday, those between second and third grade clubs being of greatest interest. Y.M.C.A. second met the third grade leader, New Lynn, on the home ground, and the town club in the grade above only secured the decision by the odd goal in five after a willing go. Y.M. led by three goals in the first half, but New Lynn put up a great recovery in the second spell and kept Y.M. at bay, while scoring twice. Ponsonby seconds proved too strong for the Swanson thirdgraders on their own ground, and returned to town winner by four goals to one, and should not be favourites for the cup. Technical Old Boys and Mount Albert was another interesting bout between second and third grade, with the suburban side defeated by three goals to one. The most exciting clash was between the two Devonport second division clubs. Shore and Belmont, and after a hard-fought battle Shore was lucky to get in the knock-out blow with a penalty kick from which Harold Smith made no mistake. The Shore juniors are undefeated this season in both championship and knock-out games, and should be too good for Y.M.C.A. in the semi-final of the Dacre Trophy tomorrow
