BODY IN HARBOUR

LABOURER FOUND DROWNED LETTERS IN POCKET The body of a labourer, Peter Hand, was discovered yesterday by Mr. W. Harkins lying on the rocks on the western side of the eastern tide deflector. Apparently the body had washed ashore there after having been in the water for some hours. In the pocket of Hand’s clothing was found a number of receipts and a letter which began “Dear Mabel” and contained the suggestion that the writer contemplated suicide. The letter was not signed nor was it finished. Hand was a labourer and lived at 1 Beresford Street. He had evidently come to Auckland from Daunevirke and Napier as the receipts found on the deceased bore the names of tradesmen in those towns. An inquest will be held.
