The Hat Trick

BAROMETER’S THIRD SUCCESS Amateurs Stage a Real Thriller BY winning the principal event at Marten yesterday. Barometer completed the hat-trick, having won his last three races, and there may he another one ahead for him soon. The best finish of the day was that in the event for amateur riders, four horses crossing the line locked together.

| Tile wvathcr was most more coneen- ! i ll than that experienced the first day, and for what was really an off day the attendance was good. The course had dried up a good bit, but it was still soft and made for slow times. Tho racing was excellent. several tight finishes being witnessed. Barometer again showed splendid form j when he defeated Black Mint for the i second time, and is now at the top of I his form. Bonogne had an easy task in a weak sprint field, and Calitlie was only a head in front of three others in the Ladies’ Bracelet. There were several spills in the Hack Steeplechase. E. Stanway, rider of San Fera, injured his back and was sent to hospital for observation, but it was not thought last evening that he was a serious case. M. Nicol was badly hurt when he -was thrown off Bisk on Wednesday, another horse tramping on his face, lacerating the nose and right eye, and bruising him in several places. It is feared that the eye may have to be taken out. The totalisator handled £12.193. making £ 13,450 for the two days. Last spring only one day’s racing was held. Novice Stakes In the Xovlce Stakes Austerity was a hot favourite. Paiko was the smartest to begin and led Juggle, Wlienuatonga and Austerity along the back and across the top. With heads straightened for home Whenuatonga ran up to Juggle, but at tJic distance Austerity put in an appearance and the Greyspear mare finished too strongly for Juggle, the favourite going on to prevail by a couple of lengths. Whenuatonga, who weakened slightly, was a similar distance back in third place, while Sunny Mint was fourth. Bobbie’s Mistake and Snowplane, the latter having been slow to move, were next. Austerity finished too strong for the opposition, and her pilot’s waiting policy was fruitful. Juggle failed to run on. but will improve, and Whenuatonga was made a lot of. The others were a poor lot, Plane being the best, for he finished well up after getting left at the barrier. Second Hack Hurdles Star Shell took up the running in the Second Hack Hurdles from Glena Bay and Lady Gay, but at the initial fence Fine Acre ran up to take the lead and pilot Star Shell into the straight. disaster overtook Fine Acre at the fence fronting the stands for the Foxton .representative made a bad jump and crashed on landing, which left Star Shell in command from Lady Gay, Arrow Boy, Glena La.y and Boyal Elm. Half a mile from home Glena Bay deposed Ladv Gay, who had previously headed off Star Shell, and the Northerner was hailed as a winner, but in the straight Lady Gay unfolded a finishing effort to come again and beat Glena Bay home by a good length, with Boyal Elm and Modern right up, the latter pair having come strongly from the turn for home. Glena Bay appeared to make his run too soon and Lady Gay easily heat him home from the last fence. Boyal Elm was finishing on. Modern ran down the last fence badly, otherwise she might have played a part in tho finish. Fine Acre was bowling along nicely out in front when he made a bad jump, and crashed, sending Bowden for a skate. Wairoma Hack Handicap I’or the ‘Wairoma Hack Handicap Full Mark was favourite. When the tapes were released Arrowhead swung round the wrong way and took no part in the race. Money Mint and Black Maire took up the running down the back from Grattan, Patearoa, Bold Front and Full .Mark. Turning into the straight, Black Maire drew away from Money Mint, but inside the distance Full Mark put in an appearance and smothered the leader over the final pinch, the Greyspear gelding going on to win by a couple of lengths from Black Maire. with Bold Front a similar distance back and just ahead of Goodwill. Money Mint and Patearoa. Full Mark again proved himself the goods, for lie came from the back and was going away at the end. Black Maire was improved by his first day’s outing, and is due any day now. Bold Front continues to run into a place, and Goodwill, after being taken off the course at the turn, got up fourth. Arrowhead, who was well backed, whipped round when the barrier went up and took no part in the race. Heaton Park Handicap Blimp was a little better backed than Barometer and the Black Mint—Boyal Game bracket for the Heaton Park Handicap. Boj*al Game led along the back from Nucleus, Barometer, Black Mint and Spearmiss, but before entering the straight Barometer took charge. He was challenged by Black Mint, but kept him off to win bv a neck. Boyal Game was third, two lengths away, and Blimp finished fourth, after an indifferent passage. Barometer got squeezed back at the start, hut Jones manoeuvred him out of trouble. He took charge three furlongs from home, anil after heading Royal Game he was called upon to stall off Black Mint, which he did in the earnest manner. This was Barometer’s third win on end. Black Mint again went a solid race, and Royal Game ran more generously than on first day. Blimp, for a favourite, ran disappointingly, and Nucleus showed improvement. Spearmiss was not ready, and Piuthair finished well back. Hack Steeplechase In the Hack Steeplechase, Bed Fuchsia was installed a firm favourite from San Fera and Harrowgate. San Fera and Lieutenant Bill were the early leaders from Gun Area, Sunart and Red Fuchsia, hut Sunart came to grief at the fence on the turn, while Bisk ran off at the next obstacle. Lieutenant Bill had taken charge before the completion of tho round from San Fera and Bed Fuchsia, with Gun Area and Harrowgate next. However, at the second of the brush double fronting the stands, Gun Area fell. Harrowgate narrowly missing trouble. Five furlongs from home Lieutenant Bill was three lengths clear of Red Fuchsia, with San Fera and Harrowgate at longer intervals. The favourite joined his fellow Awapuni candidate turning for home, and the pair had the finish to themselves. Bed Fuchsia going on to win comfortably by two lengths from Lieutenant Bill. There was a great race for third money. With San Fera toppling over at the brush on the turn. Scion set out after Harrowgate and the Southerner got up to take third money. It was a nice easy race for Red Fuchsia, who appreciated the easy fences, although he chanced the brush at the five furlongs the last time.. Lieutenant Bill gave a good displav of jumping, but the company will have to he weak before he wins. The form of the others calls for no comment. Ladies’ Bracelet There was only one ticket separating Royal Black and Calitlie on the totalisator in the amateur riders' race, and they paid the dividends after a rattling finish. Calitlie got chopped out at the

start, but his rider soon got him into a good position going out of the straight, Peshwa. Ah Wera. Calluna and Elysianor being in the van. with Koval Black tailed off at the five furlongs. Peshwa led to the home turn, closely attended by Ah Wera and Calluna. with Elysianor next and Calitlie and Boyal Black well back. Toward the post Peshwa and Elysianor were fighting it out, when Calitlie and Royal Black put in their claims, Calithc winning by half a head from Royal Black, with Peshwa a head away and Elysianor another head away fourth. For an amateur riders’ race it provided a remarkable finish, a neck separating the first four horses. Calitho came well from the back, and so did Royal Black. In a few strides the latter would have won. Elysianor only weakened at the post. The winner paid a good price in view of his recent form. Telegraph Handicap Bonogne and Bobbin were both backed right down in the sprint, and they finished as anticipated. At the start Panther got left and Oration dwelt, Coon Song shooting out soon to open a gap from Bonogne. Bobbin, Oration and Glenstar. At the half-mile, Coon Song was out five lengths from Oration. Bonogne and Bobbin, and he increased this lead to six lengths crossing the top. However, he came back to his field quickly, and as they straightened up Bonogne soon got to him, and went on to win easing up by three lengths from Bobbin, with Oration another two lengths back, and Coon Song the same distance away fourth. B. H. Morris rode a judicious race, and was never uneasy when the pacemaker got so far in front. Bobbin went a fair race, and Oration showed a glimpse of form. Glenstar never showed up. and will be better for the outing. Coon Song displayed a great burst of speed, and may be good later on. He has grown into a big horse. Farewell Hack A useful field of hacks came out for the five-furlong sprint. Blue Paper £4OO being better backed than Roi do Val £305 and Some Acre £237, all three being at fine prices in the biggest pool of the meeting. Black Odin was soon in the van, but at the end of a furlong Pellotte was the leader and tho Aucklander showed the way into the straight just in front of ~Black Odin, Ivotaki Eka, Blue Paper. King Peg, Lucre, Some Acre and Roi de Val. Pellette hung on to inside the half-distance. where Some Acre headed her, but Roi de Val came with a late burst and defeated Some Acre by a neck. King Peg. who was at a double figure price, was half a length away, and Kotaki Eka close up, with Pellette, Black Odin and Lucre following. The winner is at his best, and furthermore is well seasoned. Some Acre was hard ridden all the way up tho straight and did well to beat all but Itoi de Val. King Peg was always a possibility, and Kotaki Eka. starting from the outside, registered an attractive performance to get so close. Pellette ran a fine race and with another gallop or two should be troublesome. Lucre did not get a good run. Following are the results: Novice Stakes, of £100: about 6 furlongs.— 1 Austerity. 5.7 (P.
