BEAM SERVICE RATES
NO EARLY REDUCTION FORESEEN MERGER TO TAKE OVER (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Wednesday. It is authoritatively stated that the Empire beam telegraphy systems are being handed over to the merger company at the end of September. It was also stated that the Post Office, which was originally budgetting to work the beam at a small profit, found that it converted such a large surplus through the growth of traffic that it was contemplating a substantial cut in rates. Before the merger was mooted this prospect had definitely evaporated, because it was pointed out that the basis of capitalisation of the merger precluded the chance of a reduction in the rates for a long time ahead, though there was little fear of any increase. Regarding wireless telephony to Australia, it was stated that it would be at least six months before a commercial service was instituted. This would he definitely retained in the hands of the Post Office.
