TATE’S SHREWD TRICK
CURIOUS CRICKET EPISODE DESCRIBED HOW SUSSEX WON (Australian end N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 11 a.m. LONDON, Wed. A curious episode resulted In Sussex defeating Yorkshire, when the side had scored 196 for eight, with 10 minutes left to piay. The Yorkshire batsmen refused to run, not desiring to give Tate a chance to use the new ball, which he would be permitted to do when 300 runs had been scored. Tate promptly bowled a hall that 'vent for four byes. Then, with his second delivery of the new bali, he bowled Dennis, and got Bowes out leg before wicket, when there was still five minutes left. The incident, has produced a controversy, the “Daily News” declaring that it is utter rubbish to condemn Yorkshire as lacking in sportsmanship. “If the batsmen realised the handicap of a new ball, they can be congratulated on their presence of mind in a crisis; but it is more likely that both were conscious that runs are valueless when only ten minutes remained, and that a draw was desirable. Yorkshire has not offended against the spirit of cricket, when following Lord Hawke’s former dictum, “If you cannot win a game, why lose it?”
