SIR JAMES PARR’S TERM

MAY BE EXTENDED AFTER OCTOBER DOING GOOD WORK (The SEN’S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Wed. The present New Zealand High Commissioner, Sii’ James Parr, ■will have his term ot office extended until the end o£ October and for a further term after that if necessary, according to a statement made in the House tonight by the Prime Minister. Mr. W. J. Jordan (Manukau) brought up the subject by saying that, in regard to the High Commissioner’s vote on the Estimates, he had it in miner to ask who was going to be the next High Commissioner. He would say that the present High Commissioner was doing his job well and was spoken highly of by all who came into contact with him.

Mr. Jordan went on to discuss t.he vote for New Zealand publicity in the United Kingdom, saying that the sum of £2,000 on the Estimates was too small and that New Zealand was the only Dominion which expended so small a sum on publicity. Last year a similar sum had been voted and £3,616 had been spent. He thought the sum should be larger. Replying, the Prime Minister said that no fresh appointment had been made with regard to the High Commissionersbip yet. Sir James Parr had been doing and was doing good work. He would remain In office till the end of October and for a further term if necessary.

The Prime Minister could not say at present whether a further term would be necessary or not. Mr. R. A. Wright (Wellington Suburbs): Can’t you give the name of the next man? The Prime Minister could not. Mr. F Langstone (Waimarino) : You haven’t had many applications for the job? (Laughter.) Regarding publicity the Prime Minister said that no specified limit could l>e placed on publicity expenditure, but no good purpose Could be served by putting down a larger sum than was necessary.
