AVONDALE WOMEN’S CLUB

ADDRESS ON “PURE FOODS” The Avondale Women’s Club held ; its usual meeting at the Blockhouse Bay Picture Theatre on Tuesday. The j president, Mrs. J. W. Kealy, presided ■ over a good attendance. Miss Newton ; reported from the National Council of Women. The president introduced Mrs. Ruby , Watson, who spoke on “Pure Food.” The speaker said the health of a nation is the wealth of a nation. The ! continued use of preservatives in milk, ; butter, bacon, fresh and smoked fish, etc., destroys the natural ferments in the digestive juices, resulting in a great increase in dyspepsia among j users of food so preservatised. New Zealand is one of the few countries now using food preservatives. House- i wives should insist on the proper ad- j ministration of The Pure Food Act ; and boycott all preservatised goods, j Miss Newton proposed a vote of ! thanks to the speaker for her interesting and instructive address. An enjoyable programme of musical and elocutionary items was rendered by Miss Mavis Myers, Miss Shadbolt, Miss Hilda Gill, Miss Elaine Miss Pansy Howard and Master James Weir. Tea served by Mesdames Gill and Chaplin and blisses Hilda and Ellen Gill closed a very pleasant afternoon. BRIDGE AND 500 MANGERE CROQUET CLUB i There was a large attendance of members and friends of the Mangere Croquet Club and visitors from neighj bouring clubs, at a very enjoyable card afternoon, held in the Mangere Hall supper room, on Tuesday afternoon. The room was decorated with golden daffodils and maidenhair fern. ; Bridge and 500 were played, and after j a series of keenly contested games, Mrs. Foster of the Onehunga Club, ! won the bridge trophy, and Mrs. S. W. House, of Mangere, the “500” trophy. The hidden treasure prize was won ; by Mrs. Wilton. | During the afternoon. Mrs. K. H. ! Solomon, president of the club, on be- [ half of the members, presented Mrs. W. R. Knight, past president, with a beautiful oak tray, suitably inscribed, iin recognition of the good services | rendered to the club by the recipient, i Mrs. Knight suitably responded.
