REPRESENTATIVE RUGBY

KING COUNTRY BEATEN j AUCKLAND BACKS TOO CLEVER (From Our Own Correspondent) r TE KTJTTI, Wednesday. i to?s er °^ e thi a n? e of specta- j the Ae ~T e Ku >tt Domain todav, , touring- Rugby team easilj defeated King Country by 17 pomts to six. The first half-hour of the game provided fast and sparkling l play, and in spite of playing against \ tho wind, King Country had the better i of the exchanges, opening the scoring 1 with a try.

Shortly afterward Auckland equalised, but the kick at goal was disallowed owing to tho ball being handled twice. In quick succession Auckland, which was now showing splendid form, added two tries, one of which it converted, the scoro at half-time being: Auckland 31, King Country 3. Play in tho second half deteriorated to a considerable extent, King Country showing marked signs of distress from the pace of the first half.

The splendid passing of the Auckland forwards was a feature of the game. From then on, King Country was completely outplayed. Two further tries were registered by Auckland, King Country notching a goal from a penalty kick. McGuire had to leave the field shortly before time, owing to a cut on the eye. Auckland invariably secured from tho scrums, and had matters pretty much its own way till the end of the game, tho final score being: Auckland 17. King Country 6. Tries lor Auckland were scored by Bell (3), Falwasser and Anderson. Corner converted one. For King Country Faulkes scored an unconverted try. Roddick kicked a goal. HAWKE’S BAY DEFEATED OTAGO’S NARROW WIN Press Association NAPIER, Wednesday. In a very hard game, played at a fast pace in warm conditions, the Otago touring Rugby team beat .1 lawke’s Bay at Napier this afternoon by 14 points to 13. The visitors thoroughly deserved the win. They made fewer mistakes than the home side, and made the best of the opportuntities that came their way. Hawke’s Bay was on attack for about twothirds of the game, but was unable to finish off the movements effectively.

The local forwards outclassed Otago’s Pack in the loose and tight play, but the visiting forwards made some effective dribbling rushes, and had it not been for the Hawke’s Bay vanguard the Otago backs would have been far more dangerous, as tho local rearguarders’ defence was not strong.

Tho Otago team played a solid orthodox game, in marked contrast to Hawke’s Bay’s open style. When called on to defend, tho visitors’ ranks were almost impenetrable. Especially in tho last quarter, when the home forwards broke through the Otago forwards-, tho Otago backs smothered or cleared. On tho whole, play was not of a high standard, mishandling, principally on the part of Hawke’s Bay, spoiling good movements. The Otago backs showed a fine command of the ball in tho opening stages, the whole line handling tho ball six minutes after the start I'or Oliver to score in a position that enabled Nicholson to convert. This impressive burst on Otago’s part was responded to by Hawke’s Bay with a scries of attacks, in which two great chances were lost by bad handling. Loder marked in a handy position, and put Otago eight points ahead. Just before half-time Crawford broke away from tho ruck and sent Campbell over for an unconverted try. making tlio score Otago 8, Hawke’s Bay 3. Webb, tho Otago wing-threequarte.r, did not go on in the second half, which opened with a solid rush by Hawke’s Bay. Two long delays occurred through injuries. Then the home forwards carried play to the line, where McKay snapped up and dived over. Setford converted, making the score 8 all. Tho next score came to Otago. Nicholson went over the line, but the referee and tho Hawke’s Bay defenders thought he went out. After consulting tho line umpire, the referee awarded a try, which Souter failed to convert. Hawke’s Bay worked hard to the line, where Strachan gathered in the ball from a line-out, and scored. Grenside converted. Olliver (Otago) made a spectacular run from halfway which ended in a score well out. There was no further score. There were five retirements through injury, three on tho visitors’ side. BUSINESS HOUSES The Auckland business houses’ Rugby competition will be continued this afternoon. Owing to Victoria Park being closed to football, the matches will have to be played either at the Domain or the Showgrounds. Chief interest will centre in the game between Sargood’s and John Court’s, as it will have an important bearing upon the championship. Last week John Court’s effected a big surprise by defeating Milne and Choyce, which had previously drawn with Sargood’s.
