HAMILTON NEWS

Building in Hamilton last month constituted another record. Twentysix permits for buildings of a total value of £24,532 were issued, compared with £7,175 in August, 1928. This big total was caused mainly bv the issue of building permits for the erection of the Hamilton Hotel additions (£17,000) the new Salvation Army Citadel (£2,000) and business premises for Alessrs. Alonteith and Parker (£1,300).

A larger number of infectious diseases cases than usual were reported to the borough inspector last month. There was a total of 14 cases, comprising scarlet fever (6), tuberculosis (4), diphtheria (2), pneumonia (1) and erysipelas (1).

There is an acute shortage of lious 1 • in Hamilton, and land agents are unable to cope with inquiries from prospective tenants. Faced with the necessity of finding a new home at short notice, families, in many case?, have had to accept the best dwelling offering, which is often entirely unsuitable for their requirements. Tli© consensus of opinion is that there is an increased demand for Inlying in preference to renting houses. Bungalows ranging in price from G 9 requiring small deposits are selling readily.
