CLAIMS CHANNEL ISLE
FRENCH BANKER PUZZLES AUTHORITIES j RAISES FRENCH FLAG A Paris banker's claim to the MinQuiers, rocky islands south of Jersey, supposed to be British territory, was stated in a Jersey newspaper recently. Having taken possession of the principal islet, the claimant, whose name is Henri Leroux. denies Britain’s ownership and states that he has a permit from the French Minister to build a residence among the cottages of fishermen whose families had lived on the island for years. Fishermen brought the news to Jersey, and now the Crown officers are consulting on the matter. High authorities here claim that the Minquiers have always been a possession of Jersey. The harbour master of Jersey has annually visited a main islet and hoisted a Lnion Jack on a permanent flagstaff. It is likely that the LieutenantGovernor of Jersey will officially visit the reef and in his official eapacitv assert the claims of the British Government.
