WASHING OF FISH BOXES

HARBOUR BOARD ASKED FOR FRESH WATER AFFAIRS OF THE PORT Owiug to complaints that fishermen have been washing their fish-boxes in dirty harbour water, the medical officer of health at Auckland made the request to the Harbour Board yesterday afternoon that a fresh-water service be installed on Nelson Wharf. The chairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, explained that several fishermen who did not belong to the Fishermen’s Corporation were debarred from using the corporation’s water supply. The matter was referred to the board-in-committee, the engineer to report. BUOYANT REVENUE The treasurer reported that receipts for the 11 months to August 31, 1029, show a surplus of £11,523 over the estimates for the 11 months. Cash receipts for the Waitemata Harbour are £747 ahead for August and £10,624 for the 11 months. Figures for the Manukau Harbour are respectively £146 and £476 as increases. The tender of the Shell Oil Company, Limited, for 115 tons of bitumen for the new viaduct was accepted out of seven. The tender of Duthie, Bridson and Co., Ltd., of £Bl4 for 60 tons of rails for the viaduct was accepted from two tenderers. F. H. Claxton’s tender of £330 for hardwood sleepers was accepted from four submitted. The Papakura Town Board was granted a licence for 14 years to construct a road across the beach at the front of Wharf Street for use as a landing place for shell. HIGH WATER RATE “The City Council does not explain why the board is charged twice the rate made against other bodies,” remarked Mr. Wynyard when a letter from the Council declining to reduce the charge for water was under examination. “We are quite powerless and I think we must receive the letter,” said the chairman philosophically. A request by the Devonport Borough Council for authority to reclaim an additional area of 161 acres in Ngataringa Bay in order to extend the recreation reserve was deferred until an inspection could be made.
