MANUREWA TOWN BOARD

A letter was received by the Manurewa Town Board last evening from Mr. J. In. Massey, M.P.. stating that tho Minister of Public Works had intimated that no further retrospective payments would be made on the cost of constructing main highways. Mr. Gallagher, chairman, said the department was fencing the question. The board bad asked for assistance toward the interest account. No mention had been made of retrospective payments. The clerk was authorised to ask Mr. Massey to inform the Minister of Public Works that assistance was needed for the interest account. A letter was received from the Auckland Automobile Association recommending that white lines be adopted for the control of traffic, in place of the silent policemen at present installed. The question was deferred for future consideration. The chairman reported that a conference had been held between the beautifying committee and Mr. Hay, adviser to the Great South Road Beautifying Council, relative to the planting of trees and shrubs on the slopes adjoining the overhead railway bridge. Mr. Hay advised that sufficient shrubs had been supplied by Mr. Butterworth, of Papakura. Mr. Hay submitted a plan of the southern slope, which was adopted. He did not consider the northern slope suitable for tree-planting. Mr. G. Osborne raised a question regarding a concrete footpath on the Great South Road, which is to cost £220 up to Halsey Road. He asked what is going to happen past there. Mr. Gallaher, chairman of the board, said that evidently Mr. Osborne had not been paying attention to the discussion, as all of the figures had been considered. After lengthy discussion, it was agreed to purchase sufficient chips to repair the footpath from the public school to Corin Avenue. The work of fencing this portion of the footpath also was authorised.
