MAJESTIC
“THIS IS HEAVEN” Vilma Banky makes a triumph out of her experiment with the role of a modern girl in “This is Heaven,” her newest starring picture, which is now at the Majestic Theatre. Blonde and beautiful as ever in her waitress's costume, appealing as ever in her love scenes with James Hall, and showing an aptitude for comedy in the light situations of the earlier part of the picture, she has proved to the public that Samuel Goldwyn did wisely when ho decided to give her a talkie role in which she could be just a beautiful girl of our own times. “This Is Heaven” gives her the part of a little immigrant Cinderella who arrives at Ellis Island and is immediately swallowed up in the seething mass of New Yorkers trying to earn a living. She goes to work as a waitress in a white-tiled restaurant, J meets l#er dream hero under the im- ! pression that he is a chauffeur and j does not discover that he is really a [ blue-blooded millionaire until liis re- j ticence on the subject has almost ruined their happiness. Even though the first part of the picture is almost light comedy, as complications arise and the situation grows I serious, there is no break in the acting or direction. The result is that i Miss Hanky’s ability in serious roles j still stands her in good stead and shows i both the new and the old Vilma in a i part which gives her excellent oppor--1 tunities in both directions. Other attractions on the programme are the short talkie features. “The Victoria Girls” dancing and singing, a ! Fox Movietone News, and the all-talk- J ing comedy, “The Raw Recruit.” The delightful pantomime, “Babes ini the Wood,” is being presented at the j matinees every afternoon during the school holidays. The singing and ; dancing by the company of 60 is • thoroughly delighting the children, and is one of the best children's pantos j put on in Auckland.
