CHALLENGE REFUSED
SOUTHLAND HOLDS FIRM TO RANFURLY SHIELD "TEAM NOT FIT TO PLAY" Press Association INVERCARGILL. Monday. At a meeting 1 of the executive of the Southland Rugby Union this evening a telegram was read from the South Canterbury Union stating that it desired to challenge for the Ranftnly Shield, the game to be played on September 11. “This matter requires careful consideration," said the chairman, Mr. A. H. Stott. "The team has been on an extended tour and has suffered a number of casualties. It ' seems hardly reasonable that we should be expected to play." Mr. A. J. Geddes said the team was arriving home the day before the date suggested, the club competition had still to be finished. He suggested that the New Zealand L T nion be advised of the circumstances and notified that the Southland Union did not feel prepared to accept a challenge until next season. It was decided to receive the telegram and advise the New Zealand Union of the position.
