MARTON SPRING FIXTURE Prospects For Tomorrow A STRONG Auckland contingent will be racing at the Marton meeting tomorrow and Thursday, and it is confidently expected that a good share ot the stake-money will come north. “Early Bird’s" 7 review of the opening day > card tomorrow is appended.

The opening - meeting at which the seven-stone minimum comes into its j Qtvn once more is that at Marton. the ! Af.J.C. racing tomorrow and on Thurs- ; day. The acceptances are excellent, ; and probably bigger than ever before I for this popular spring fixture. No less ‘ than 2S paid up for the Trial Plate, a race that has served as the steppingstone often in the past to bigger things. It is now certain that the necessity of running this event in two divisions will be obviated, for the course is big and wide and will take up to 25 at the six-furlongs barrier. The course is said to have been in good order throughout the winter, and therefore the going should not be worse than dead, unless rain falls in the interim. The opening event is the TRIAL PLATE The maiden performers with beginning qualities are the ones to be looked for. The possibilities are Rod Lnne, Snowplane, False Scent, Kotahi Eka, Glenison, Juggle, Arrowzone, AVhenuatonga, Austerity, Equitant. Lucre, Sunny Mint and Retract. Of this lot the best form has been provided by Snowplane, Kotahi Eka, Retract, TVhenuatonga Equitant and Lucre, and from this half-dozen the winner should come. Favourites may be the promising three-year-olds EQUITANT SNOWPLANE FIRST HACK HURDLES An acceptance of sixteen is indeed satisfactory for the obstacle race. Royal Damon and Powhiri may improve on Dannevirke form, particularly the former, who will be at home. Royal Elm, Peshwa, Ah Wera, Kingi Pita, Glena Bay and Hard Gold. Glena Bay’s Trentham running suggests that he will be difficult to head off, while Royal Damon, the consistent Peshwa, and Ah Wera may be i in the market. Best backed in all ' probability will be GLENA BAY PESHWA SPRING HACK HANDICAP Instead of the usual small field in this event, there will be a dozen on hand on this occasion. Hopwood may be suited by a shorter journey, and Black Maire may be better suited by the shorter race later in the day. Royal Black is a good middle distance hack, and he reads particularly well after his Dannevirke outings. Bold Front is a bad horse to follow, Fine Acre would only require to run up to Riccarton form to win. Balloon is susceptible to improvement, and Elysianor is given a chance. Money Mint won over seven furlongs at Trentham six weeks back, and Curtsey finished third to King’s Jest and Aberfeldy at the same meeting. Apparently* a journey suits Curtsey*. Calithe lias been performing really well with big weights up, and he may relish the lighter £>cale. The others do not appeal. In the market most money may be for ROYAL BLACK FINE ACRE MARTON HANDICAP This, as the first of the spring handicaps leading up to much more important events later on, is sufficiently important to warrant particular attention. Heading the List is Gold Cure, nicely treated too, but the journey may beat him, fit and all as he is. "Barometer won handsomely at Ellerslie recently, and that form may prove most reliable to follow. Royal Game and Black Mint have shown winning form of late, and as they will be bracketed on the totalisator there should be a big demand for this combination. Mountain Heath has beejn doing good track work, and he appears to be coming back to bis best now. Nucleus was a winner at the Dannevirke meeting, but Discourse may be in the want of another race or two. Kawhakina is not altogether reliable, but he is one liable to bob up over a middle distance, for he stays splendidly. Barometer has been penalised 91b. for his Ellerslie win, whereas both Black Mint and Nucleus have been leniently treated for their Dannevirke successes, even allowing for the difference in the quality of the fields. To sum up, it would appear as if the most fancied will be BAROMETER BLACK MINT HUNT CUP STEEPLECHASE Even allowing for a few scratchings, the Hunt Cup promises to be an entertaining affair, with spirited competition forthcoming from Sunart, Alarie, Pikimai, Askari, Revel, Mataipuke, Risk. Rayonnant, Ratapiko, Mandate and Harrowgate, so that betting should cover a wide range. Favoured on the totalisator may be A LARI C ASKARI TUTAENUI HACK HANDICAP Roi do Val ran well at Riccarton, and the To Aroha representative, Black Maire. promises to show up, as does the

I To Rapa geldinc. Kai.a. Goodwill showed form fit Dannevirke. and of the ; others those to appeal most are Des- ! ert Lad, Skyrider. Warflame. Yinella. Call Again, Trig and Arrowhead. The j majority of speculators will probably j turn their attention to BLACK MAIRE KAHA Railway Handicap This comprises probably the best field ever seen in a sprint race at Marton, and is well up to metropolitan standard. Reremoana may not be ready, and Prince Humphrey also may want a race, although he is good enough to win at the weight. Star Area may require a longer journey, and so too with Star Stranger. Panther is good when in form, and Bonogne’s last two outings have been impressive indeed. Blimp is not greatly fancied, but Dobbin’ second last week brings him into the discussions properly. Eaglet was a very smart two-year-old, and she appears to bo the pick of the handicap. From all accounts she has done the necessary work, and it is difficult to find one to head her off at the weights. Royal Game is preferred in the big handicap, and Moutoa Treasury* usually comes to hand early. Staghunter is given a chance with his light impost, and Oration, Hopwood and Glen star cannot be ruled out. particularly Hopwood. who, if reserved for this race | may be the real danger to the Takanini filly. The favourites may be: EAGLET DOBBIN Electric Hack Handicap A big field will mark a fitting conelusion to the opening day's sport. There are several smart three-year-olds engaged here, and they may supply the winner. They are Glenartney, Norval Tea, Valpre, Hunting Cry. ! Push and Trig, and with Full Mark, ! Lucky Bag, Money Mint. Claremore, ' Some Acre, Juggle and Haviland will provide plenty of material for the punters. Most fancied may be: GLENARTNEY LUCKY BAG—ADVENTUS BRACKET Recent Winners Acora, having won at Dannevirke, is not eligible for the Trial Plate. Rehandicaps of recent winners made by Mr. PI. Coyle are as follow: Plack Hurdles.—Peshwa, up 141 b, from 9.5 to 10.5, for a second and a first at Dannevirke. Spring Hack. —Hopwood. up 31b, from lf.o to 9.3, for win at Dannevirke.
