IN GARB OF 1883
VETERAN OARSMAN OF ST. GEORGE’S OLD MEMBERS SPEAK Clad in long whites trousers, blue flannel shirt, and one of those piratical woollen hats known among yachtsmen as "jelly-bags,” Mr. W. Winks gave members of St. George’s Rowing Club at their annual reunion on Saturday evening an idea of the rowing togs worn in 1883. Mr. Winks assumed this garb to reply to the toast of the "Old Members.” Re recalled particularly the social pleasures of rowing in the eighties. Also replying to the toast were Messrs. T. Richards, Vaughan Cooper, E. Elliott, P. Steele, S. E. Scott, and J. Craig. Mr. Richards told a story of a desperate trip to Motutapu in in-rigged boats. "It was all right going” he said, “but we nearly swamped on the way home, and had to land at Orakei to empty the boat.” “Yes, we were lucky to get back alive,” interposed Mr. Vaughan Cooper, who was also a member of that venturesome crew. Mr. Elliott spoke of training sprints at five o’clock in the morning, when the present club captain, Mr. V. Dunne, had cajoled his crew into coming down to the sheds early for a sprint to St. Mary’s Bay. "I might come back to active rowing when the club shifts to Orakei, but I trust you will not put me in the same boat as your captain,” he added. NORTH SHORE CLUB The social committee of the North Shore Rowing Club presented two new practice fours to the club at a pleasent function at the club’s boathouse on Saturday afternoon. The boats were handed over by Mrs. C. Farquharson and were christened June and John. Mr. S. Rutland, club captain, thanked the social committee for the services rendered the club, which, with the new racing four also purchased by the committee, would give to the club a most up-to-date plant that should last for many years. A big surprise was sprung upon the ladies’ committee, Mesdames C. Seagar, C. Fai'quharson, E. Sharpe, S. Butland, E. Webb and the Misses H. Tatton, G. Melville, G. Charman and C. Porter, when, on behalf of the club members, Mr. E. E. Aladden presented each with the club’s silver badge, suitably engraved, as a mark of appreciation of the services rendered. Trial fours were rowed in the new boats, on a course from North Head to a point off the boathouse. In the first heat the crews were:—F. Norris (4), B. Vowles (3). A. Lawrence (2), D. Bearing (1); A. Coates (4), C. Olliver (3), J Jenks (2), L. Carlyle (1). Xorris’s crew quickly took a slight lead, but before the torpedo wharf was reached Coates had drawn level. First one and then 'the other forged ahead until opposite the old cargo wharf site Coates’s crew drew ahead and won by three-parts of a length. The crews in the final were:—E. Korn (4 ), F Eaton (3 ). A. Lwrence ( 2), C. J. Jenks (2), L. Carlyle (1). The crews raced on almost even terms until half the course had been covered. Coates then took command, but Korn’s four quickly challenged, and in a most exciting finish the judge was unable to separate the crews as the line was crossed and declared a dead-heat. The crews at once turned back for re-row, going as far as the torpedo wharf. From an even start there was little between them until 5 0 yards from j the line. Coates’s crew then put in a i strong spurt and moved ahead to win by j a canvas length. t ; j
