GAME ENDS IN DRAW AUCKLAND V. WAIKATO FAST PLAY AT HAMILTON (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. Although Waikato held a territorial advantage throughout the representative hockey match against Auckland Steele Park on Saturday, sound defence in the circle prevented any material advantage, the game ending in a draw, one goal each. A great run by B. Spiers. Waikato, shortly after the bully-off carried the ball to the visitor’s goal mouth, where Conradi scored. Play continued in the Auckland half, Hobbs shooting hard from the corner. The attack failed and H. Watts sent the ball to the other end of the field, where B. Spiers saved. Anthony scored from a penalty corner but he was pulled up for sticks and Waikato cleared. At half-time the scores were Waikato 1, Auckland 0. Play moved rapidly from end to end immediately on resuming. Finally Williams sent Grace away for Auckland and a penalty corner resulted, but Fletcher, the Waikato goalkeeper. was too quick. From a long corner Anthony passed to Watts, Monteith scoring for Auckland. Lastminute efforts by both teams were unsuccessful and the game ended with the score One-all. Messrs. J. Tait and W. G. Fabling were the referees. WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIPS AUCKLAND DOWN AGAIN Press Association GISBORNE, Sunday. The . New Zealand ladies’ hockey championship tourney was continued yesterday in fine weather, and before a large attendance. The grounds were in perfect condition. In Section A, Poverty Bay A, 6, defeated Bush, 0; Rotorua, 2, defeated South Canterbury, 1; and Southland, 2, defeated Auckland A, 1. In Section 13, Canterbury, 15, defeated Poverty Bay B, 0; Wellington, 4, defeated Hawke’s Bay, 3; and Eastern, G, defeated Auckland B, l. Although defeated by two goals to one by Southland, Auckland A, giving their best display, were unlucky in losing. Southland’s second goal was gained by Miss Mclntyre centring from an offside position, for Miss Hislop to score. Auckland had all the better of the game, and in the second half, and in the last stages were swarming in Southland’s circle and were unlucky in not scoring. The Auckland fullbacks, Misses Chirney and McEnteer, gave brilliant exhibitions, clearing the circle in fine style and repeatedly feeding their forwards. Mrs. Hamlin and Miss McCullough were the best of the Auckland forwards. Misses Mclntyre and Hislop scored for Southland, and Miss Craig scored for Auckland. The Auckland B team played a sound, defensive game against Eastern, but were hopelessly outclassed. The Northerners never looked particu - larly dangerous except in the opening and final stages. Eastern’s combination in the forwards was better than on the previous occasion, when they played Hawke’s Bay. The final score of six goals to one represented the difference in the two teams. Early in the first half Miss Wylde Brown scored for Auckland. Eastern’s scorers were Misses Crawford (2), Bond (2), Graham and Stanton. The positions of the teams at the end of the third day’s play were: Section A: Poverty Bay A, 3 wins; Ruahine (Dannevirke), Southland, Rotorua, 2 wins; Bush, South Canterbury, Auckland, no wins.
