HOTEL DESTROYED
BOARDERS ESCAPE DOWN KNOTTED SHEETS FIRE AT PALMERSTON Press Association PALMERSTON N.. Sunday. Early on Saturday morning the Post Office Hotel in Broadway was badly gutted by fire, which is believed to have originated in the office on the ground floor through the fusing of an electric wire. There were only six boarders in the house, three of whom had narrow escapes, making their way to safety down a rope of knotted sheets. * The alarm was given Just in time, as the hotel was then full of smoke and flames, and the fire was spreading rapidly. The boarders pay tribute to the good work of'the licensee’s wife, who gave the alarm and got the occupants out of the house.
The brigade succeeded in keeping the outbreak within bounds and preventing the flames from spreading to neighbouring premises. The damage to the hotel is considerable. Three boarders lost' their personal effects. The licensee. Mr. J. Donne, was absent at the time.
