MARTON TRIALS
Work at Wanganui on Saturday YOUNGSTERS SHOW PACE especial to THE SUN} WANGANUI, Sunday. Conditions on Saturday morning - , so far as the •weather was concerned, were eminently suitable for preparations for the forthcoming 1 spring meetings at Marton and Wanganui, but rain had fallen during the night, making the tracks rather on the dull side. Thus the recorded by the horses galloped were scarcely as fast as would otherwise have been expected, and especially over the concluding two furlongs of number one track, was the effect of tho dead going evident. For instance, the two first furlongs of a half-mile, admittedly one of the the fastest sections of the track, would be recorded in time that was as much as four seconds faster than the concluding quarter. Still, the efforts of the Marton and Wanganui candidates can be held to be at least creditable. Improving Juveniles On the hurdle track, to commence proceedings, Paratoo (J. Barry) and Arastar (P. Farrell) were partnered in a brush over three furlongs, with Paratoo. going nicely at the finish, fully two lengths ahead of his companion, recording a tick over 39 for the distance. The son of Grandcourt and Orozino earned attention from critics when he was taken to the Trentham winter meeting for purposes of education, and when he is seen at tho Wanganui spring fixture considerable development will be in evidence. Zareno went twice round, well out, on number one track without being asked to extend herself, being treated to a spurt up the straight the second time. She evidenced a desire to travel faster and looks a greatly im-
proved mare as compared with the middle of July. Likely Improver
Auctioneer (J. Barry) and Warflame were associated in a gallop over five furlongs, at the end of which YYarflame was a little ahead of her partner, though both were travelling nicely. The first furlong was left behind in 12 3-5, the quarter taking 24 3-5, while they took just a tick over 37 for three furlongs. Then they commenced to show the effects of the holding track in the run home, for they registered 1.5 4-5 for the full journey, which indicated that the concluding quarter occupied 28 3-ssec. Still, it was quite a good gallop and showed Auctioneer in a good light, for the half-brother (by Gasbag) to that fair performer King Mart had recently shown signs of laziness in his track essays. Warflame is sure to be improved by her outing at Marton. Banket struck out freely in a fourfurlong task and was travelling smoothly at the finish. The Psychology mare has quietened down a lot since racing last season, and she may be found finishing on this season when the pressure is applied. Mr. L. G. Paul sent his pair of juveniles, Arisus and Arvada, over three furlongs, the time recorded being a tick under 40. As the morning’s times went, this was quite satisfactory, and the two-year-olds appear to be developing fast. Time To Improve Valrna and Just An Idea left four furlongs behind in 52 2-5, the pair taking 28 2-5 for the final 'quarter, but neither was being pushed over the final stages. The first-named, a daughter of Warplane, shows a fair amount of pace and should repeat the performance with the colours up. As for Just An Idea, a patient policy is being pursued with this Chief Ruler gelding, and it is hardly likely that anything serious will be asked of him before the Christmas meetings. Another gallop was that in which Star Area and Count Palatine were partnered. They covered the halfmile in 52 2-5, both moving pleasingly all the way. Count Palatine, a halfbrother, by Paladin, to the Great Northern Derby winner Martama, was started on two occasions only last season, but it is more than likely that he will be seen out at the Wanganui meeting. Star Area claims engagements in the Seafield Handicap and the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes at the local fixture, and will be found well prepared to give a good account of himself. Pie is to be given a run m the sprint at Marton. Among others to whom useful tasks were entrusted were Vertigern, Grecian, Talisker, Gasforiyi and Rewatoa (Chief Ruler—Rewa Rewa).
