LICENCE FOR BREWERY

RIGHTS OF RESIDENTS HAURAKI MEMBER’S PROTEST (THE SUN'S Parliamentary Reporter) PARLIAMENT BLDGS., Friday. The granting of the licence to the Otahuhu Brewery was criticised ■in the House o£ Representatives by Mr. A. W. Hall (Hauraki). He said that there was a strong feeling in the district that the brewery should not be licensed in a residential district. With another member he had interviewed the Minister of Customs, the Hon. W. B. Taverner, on the subject. He told them that as the licence had already been issued, subject to certain conditions, nothing further could be done. If it were the law that a licence for the brewery did not require to be advertised, Mr. Hall suggested that the law be amended. Such a licence should not be issued before the people concerned had been consulted. The issue of licences by district licensing authorities would be much more satisfactory. In his reply to the alliance deputation on the subject the Prime Minister had said that the licence had been granted by the Minister without its coming before Cabinet. Although Sir Joseph Ward had intimated that a Licensing Bill would uot be introduced Mr. Hall hoped that he would see his way to introduce one or two small amendments, w'hieh were not of a contentious nature.
