FEILDING CLUB

JUBILEE THIS YEAR Tlie Feilding Jockey Club lias issued j an attractive booklet embodying: tlie { programmes for its fixtures tills season. The forthcoming term is a momentous one in the history of the club, for it murks the jubilee of the club's exist- j cnee. The November fixture will be \ termed the jubilee meeting, at which j the good figure of £ 2,405 will be offered ; in stakes on the opening day, which j will be augmented by £ 1,550 on the second day. j The stake attached to the Feilding i Jubilee Cup at the November meeting J will be £605, inclusive of a gold cup : valued at £ 105, which has been pre- i sented by Mr. C. F. Johnston, of Feild- j ing. A gold replica will be presented j to the trainer of the winning horse unless he is the owner, in which case it will go to the owner of the second horse, while the winning horseman will likewise receive a replica. Other attractive events on the opening day are the 24th Feilding Stakes of £SOO and the Flying Handicap of £3OO. The St. Andrew’s Handicap, the principal event set down for decision on the second day of the Feilding Jockey Club’s jubilee meeting in November, carries with it a stake of £3OO, while the Oroua Nursery Handicap, for two-year-olds, and the Colyton and Empire Handicaps, open six and seven furlong events, are each worth £2CO. A striking comparison between the stake moneys furnished by racing clubs in tlie years gone by is given in the booklet published by the Feilding Jockey Club for its jubilee meeting in November. At a meeting held by the j club on Easter Monday, ISBS, eight ; races were run for a total stake value of £ 2 47. Of that amount the sum of £IOO was devoted to the Feilding Handicap, a hack race at catch weights carrying the munificent reward of . | £7. Four years later stake money had j been increased to £ 300. In those days , the open hurdles were contested over ! two miles, the Feilding Handicap over i one and a-half miles, while a hack : race was included wherein the com- j petitors were required to cover a mile ; and a-quarter. Further interesting facts and figures embodied in tlie Feilding Jockey Club s booklet are:—Mr. J. E. Henry's first handicapping and the late Mr. NY. H. Hartgill’s first judging were performed for tlie Feilding Club. Mr. B. X. Sandlands, one of the present stipendiary stewards for the Dominon, was a steward and president of the club before assuming his present position. In 1905 more money was put through the totalisator at the Easter meeting of the Feilding Club than at either the Canterbury (two days) and Auckland (three days) fixtures, the respective figures being:—Feilding, £30,117; Canterbury, £19,784; Auckland, £27.994. Feilding’s turnover for Easter, 1929, was £69,081.
