A SUPER-BUS

LUXURY FOR ST. HELIERS AND KOHI PEOPLE INTERESTING SPECIFICATIONS Residents of St. Heliers and Kohimarama will shortly have the pleasure of riding in the most comfortable and most up-to-date bus yet adopted for passenger transport in Auckland. This omnibus, which will be easily -the largest single-decker on the road, has been purchased by Messrs. L. J. Keys, Ltd., for running on the St. Ileliers-City run. For those interested in the mechanical features, which make comfortable riding possible, the following brief specifications are quoted: The chassis is a 6-cylinder Leyland, is of exceedingly simple design, incorporating the most recent advances in modern internal combustion engineering. The power-unit consists of a powerful smooth-running 6-cylinder engine, the bore and stroke being 4in x s£in. The R.A.C. rating is 38.4 and the maximum B.H.P. 100. The engine is designed to give smooth and efficient operation from 200 to 2,000 r.p.m. The engine is suspended in the frame at three points and is of unit construction with the radiator and gearbox. The seven bearing dynamically-bal-anced crankshaft is of nickel steel, and overhead valves and camshaft with easily adjustable tappets and detachable head are incorporated. QUIET IN OPERATION The valve mechanism is lubricated from a deep trough through which the camshaft rotates and which is supplied with oil through a secondary pump. The engine is mounted longitudinally in the chassis at an angle of 4deg., and there is a continuous flow from end to end which keeps the cams and rockers partially submerged in oil, so that they are quiet in operation and subject to a minimum of wear. The steering is of the semi-forward control and so arranged that the driver is immediately opposite the door, thus making it very suitable for a “pay as you enter** type. The worm housing of the back axle is off centre to permit it to project beneath a seat, thus allowing a very low aisle between the rows of seats. Four wheel brakes are fitted, and the footbrake operates through “Dew-andre-Servo” mechanism to all four wheels, and the handbrake to one set j of rear wheels. Petrol tank of 42 5 gallons capacity | fitted, and 38in x Sin low pressure balloons. THE BODYWORK The body, which was built by D.S.C. and Cousins and Cousins, Ltd., Auckland, is a very fine piece of work, and iho seating capacity is for 33 persons.
