POSITION IN CANTERBURY Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Friday. The potato market has provided further excitement during the week. On i uesday afternoon there was a tendency toward a decline in values. On "Wednesday and Thursdav and today sales were made at £ g 15s, and in an odd case or two at £8 12s 6d. In the four days since Monday the decline has been about 30s to 35s a ton. The Waipiata the Wingatui and Kawatiri loaded at Southern ports, and it was expected that they would take up to S.jOO or 10,000 sacks from all ports, out 8,040 sacks were picked up at southern ports, and when the vessels arrived at Lyttelton to complete loading no fewer than 19,000 sacks were awaiting them. This means that, including the WaipiaLa’s consignment, a lota! of 35,000 sacks were available for Shipment between Monday and Friday night. This unexpected avalanche has temporarily staggered the market. The Wingatui sailed tonight with 9,000 sacks and the Kawatiri will take about 7,500 tomorrow.

A steady business is being maintained in small seeds, and prices are nrm. Perennial ryegrass is worth Os 9d to 7s a bushel, f.0.b., s.i.; Italian 5s 9d to 6s; cowgrass. S7s 6d to 90s a cwt., and cocksfoot. 13Jd a lb. The oats and chaff markets are quiet. The report of lower quotations to Auckland from Tasmania has weakened the •Northern chaff market. Values locady are from £ 6 5s to £6 10s a ton, f.o.b , s.i. The wheat market is quiet Mi'lmg is quoted at 6s 4d, f.0.b., and fowl wheat at 5s lOld.
