RAID BY RED SEAMEN
SIX CHINESE SOLDIERS KILLED 10,000 TROOPS ON MOVE (United Service) Reed. 9.50 a.m. SHANGHAI, Friday. Despite reports of a possible amicable settlement of the present SinoRussian dispute, emanating from diplomatic circles in Peking, the attitude of the Chinese and Soviet troops on the border is unchanged. An official communique states that a a force of 10,000 Russians has been dispatched toward the Kingan Mountains, in 'Western Manchuria, for the purposes of seizing the mountain passes. Two hundred marines landed from a Russian gunboat and raided Chinese villages along the Amur River, Manchuria, on Tuesday. An encounter followed, in which a Chinese corporal and five privates were killed, and many civilians were wounded by stray bullets. News from Manchuli appears to indicate that there is little fear of a resumption of warfare on a large scale. The Chinese evidently are anxious to secure a peaceful settlement. Nevertheless, no indication has been given of their willingness to comply with Russia’s demands.
