BRITISH JUSTICE

RESPECT FOR LAW AND ORDER DUTY OF JURIES (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Thursday. “One of the distinguishing characteristics of British justice which makes it different from all other forms of civilisation is that it causes respect for law and order and the safety of life and property,” declared Mr. Justice Ostler, addressing the jury in a sheep-stealing case at the Hamilton Supreme Court today. That characteristic could only be maintained if juries were prepared to do their duty, lie added. If they were convinced that prisoner in the case was guilty they should not allow any such consideration that prisoner’s wife had been incapacitated; that after all only sheep were stolen: or any other such thing to sway them in returning a verdict in accordance with their convictions. The jury returned a verdict of guilty with a recommendation to mercy in the case in question.
