“PICCADILLY”
NOTED STAR, AUTHOR AND DIRECTOR TIVOLI’S SUCCESS After seeing- the film “Piccadilly,” at the Tivoli Theatre last evening, Auckland. audiences can endorse the opinion of the London “Sunday Pictorial” that “it ranks with the finest films made in any country.” The story, by Arnold Bennett, is full of tense and dramatic situations, and so amazingly characterised that one is kept absorbed in its unfolding. The whole film has been directed by A. L. Dupont with imagination, and has some of the most effective acting yet seen in a British picture. Anna May Wong dominates the film with an amazing performance full of grace and Oriental charm; Gilda Gray does equally well, while Jameson Thomas has never appeared to greater advantage. Mention must be made of a newcomer to the screen, a Chinese actor. King HoChang, who scores a complete triumph. The lighting of the film is remarkable, and the camera work is magnificent. The glimpses of Piccadilly Circus at night, the gaiety of the night club, the cleverly selected types, and the Limehouse scenes are fascinating. Bright supporting pictures, including a Iloot Gibson “Western” story, complete an enjoyable programme.
