HOCKEY AT GISBORNE

WOMEN’S CHAMP 105 SHIP AUCKLANDERS BEATEN Press Association GISBORNE, Thursday. The New Zealand ladies’ hockey championship tourney opened this afternoon in ideal weauier, and in the presence of betwen and 3,000 people. Three grounds have been allotted for tho tournament, and gthey are in thoroughly good condition. The 14 teams competing, headed by the city band, marched in double lines round the ground. Each team was accorded an enthusiastic ovation. The parade was headed by the Canterbury' team, last year’s champions. Th»e teams then assembled in front of tl*e crowded grandstand, where the Mayor, Mr. D. W. Coleman, officially declared tho tournament open. Following are the results of the.play: Section A. —Poverty Bay A, 4, v. South Canterbury, 2; Rotorua, 3 v. Bush, 2; Ruahine (Dannevirke), 5, v. Auckland A, 1. Section B. —YVairarapa. 5, v. Auck- . land B, 1; Wellington, 5, v. Poverty Bay B, 0; Canterbury, 4, v. Hawke’s ! Bay, 2. Ruahine proved to be too fast for the Auckland A team, and ran the Northerners off their legs. The score could easily have been increased had the Dannevirke team wished. The Auckland backs and forwards com- - bined well, but the shooting in front of goal was faulty. For the winners, Miss R. Loader played brilliantly, and scored three goals, while Miss McKinnon scored two. Miss Lowe scored for Auckland. In the match between YVairarapa and Auckland B, Miss F. Booth scored two goals before half-time, and one later. All the other goals came after the interval, when Miss I. Booth and Mrs. Te Tau scored for YVairarapa, and Miss J. Carlaw for Auckland. Miss A. Black played a splendid game as fullback for the losers. YVairarapa’s superiority was undoubted. The following selectors were chosen tonight for the inter-island match: North Island: Miss Dawson (Auckland) and Messrs. 1. Scott (Wellington), and T. Smale (Poverty Bay). South Island: Messrs. H. Thropp (Can- . terbury), R. Surgenor (Southland) and H. Hamilton (Eastern Southland).
