BROWN’S DEFAULT
DISAPPOINTMENT AT HAMILTON LESLIE’S PUNCHING METHODS (From Oar Oion Correspondent) HAMILTON, Thursday. | The non-appearance of Bert Brown, i who was scheduled to meet Glen Leslie i ! in the professional bout for a purse t j of £IOO on Tuesday, caused a good j deal of disappointment among Htimilj ton boxing fans. j Brown was stated to have been suf- i j fering from a severe cold, and local j patrons of the sport want to know i why he was well enough tu leave by j ! boat for Sydney next day. Leslie, they point out, was also suf- j [ fering from a bad cold, but he kept : faith with the public, and appeared ; in a 10-round bout with Kid Smith, ; of Stratford. Leslie was warned for back-hitting and rabbit-punching several times during the light, which he won on a points decision. Ho claims that his type of punching was quite legitimate, and that the referee, Air. R. Meale, of Auckland, had confu ed the different types of punches. Be that as it may, Leslie undoubtedly had the better of his opponent, who. in spite of the official announcement, appeared to weigh several pounds less than Leslie. The Stratford boy put up a sound defence, especially in the earlier rounds, and forced the pace for a while. The third, eighth, and ninth rounds were 1 pretty even, while the seventh went ! to Smith. Near the end. Leslie at- ; racked hotly, and Smith appeared to | be beaten up. There was a lot of hard hitting. Smith taking a share, j although he had obviously met a beti ter man.
