BADMINTON
C. ELLETT ELIMINATED KEEN PLAY IN MEN’S SINGLES The most notable upset in the pre- > ; liminaries of the badminton tournament yesterday was the elimination j of C. Ellett (Northern, Manse.ro) by Rishworth (Parnell), who displayed J unusual steadiness and fine control to | keep Ellett at the back of the court J and defeat him in straight sets. Even in tlio early stages, the men s j singles provided some spectacular j games. E. W. GrifP hs took J. } Southon to three sets, and put up a j great fighting display when trailing in ! | tho last set. Only a series of skilful j l drop shots allowed Southon to hold I | his lead. Solomon, a young Mangoro player, gave T. Kelly (Parnell) quite j a good running round, as did E. 1 Tonks later in the evening, Tonks j actually leading 12—G in the first set.’ Meredith was eliminated by Southon in three sets. Southern's activity countering Meredith’s skill and anticipation. In the men's doubles, Tonks and j Nash surprised the Ellett brothers by ( taking the first set of a three-set J match. In the women’s doubles, Miss j Harden and Miss Cowper (Wanganui) had a great struggle against Mrs. Wilkes and Miss Thomas (Morrinsville), and only came through after three strenuous sets. The Wanganui pair had another keen contest in the handicaps against Miss Ellett and Miss Solomon. The Mangere girls had picked up their handicap, and were leading 19 —14 when a run by the visitors took them to 20—19. Here Miss Harden fell, losing a rare chance of victory, and Mangere took the match, 21 : —20. Another good game in the women’s doubles was the threeset match in which Mrs. Needham and Miss Newton (Central) beat Mrs. Clark and Mrs. Bell (St. Aldan’s). Mrs. Clark’s play showed considerable finish. In the handicap combineds, Miss Colbeck and Harris (Remuera) extended Paul and Miss Wilson. The same pair played a good losing game against K. H. Wilson, and Miss Waters in the championship event. Austin and Mrs. Austin (Wanganui) put up an excellent resistance against Kelly and Miss D. Ellett, Austin’s overhead being very sound. The standard generally was good, and gives promise of some fine performances in the later stages. Last evening there was a good attendance of spectators. The light early in the day was poor, but tho installation of extra bulbs effected a distinct improvement. CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES Men’s Championship Singles.—First round: I.
