“RINGING THE CHANGES”
ATTEMPT TO DEFRAUD SHOPKEEPER SWINDLE ALMOST SUCCEEDS Press Association WELLINGTON, Today. A story of an attempt to ring the changes was told in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday, when Vincent Christie, aged 45, pleaded guilty to stealing ten shillings from Edward Torrance, a shopkeeper. Accused went into the shop and ordered a soft drink. He handed over a ten shilling note and received 9s 8d in change. Accused said he had the change in silver and asked for the note back. After fumbling in his pocket for some time Christie said that the shopkeeper had better make it a pound, as ho had more than he thought. The pound note was then handed over, but accused, after more fumbling, handed it back, saying he did not have the change after all. Christie then left the shop, and a few minutes later the shopkeeper found he had lost ten shillings. He followed accused and gave him in charge. Accused was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment. He had 22 previous convictions, including 11 in Australia.
