MOTOR-CYCLES COLLIDE
PILLION RIDER SERIOUSLY HURT OTHERS’ LUCKY ESCAPE Shocking injuries were received by Mr. Alfred James Turner, aged 30, of Avondale, as the result of a head-on collision betwen two motor-cycles, one ridden by Mr. William Charles Skinner, the other by Mr. Glenelg Bartaul, in the Great North Road, last evening. Both riders escaped comparatively lightly. Mr. Turner, who was riding on the pillion behind Mr. Skinner, was thrown heavily on to the centre of the road, and it is believed that he was then run over by a following motor-bus. Besides a compound fracture of the right leg just above the knee and a double fracture of the same leg just above the ankle, his right arm was broken and he received severe injuries to the head, thought to be a fracture of the skull. It ■ was found necessary to amputate the right leg, at an early hour this morning, and the condition of the patient is reported to be grave. Mr. Skinner received cuts on the face, and although admitted to the Auckland Hospital, was later able to return home. Mr. Bartaul had his boot torn off by the force of the impact, but suffered only minor injuries to the foot. The accident happened about halfpast six, near the Alexandra Road corner. Mr. Skinner, who was driv ing his motor-cycle toward Avondale with his passenger, saw a car coming out of a side street and in his endeavour to avoid it, swerved and came into contact with Mr. Bartaul’s machine. The motor-cycles were not badly damaged. Mr. Turner was conveyed to Auckland Hospital by the St. John Ambulance.
