WON BIG DOUBLE
YOUNG MAN FINED FOR FALSE DOCUMENT BOOKMAKER AS INFORMER HAMILTON, Today. Pleading guilty to drawing up a false document, Clifford Ernest Corin, 25, was fined £lO by Mr. Justice Ostler in the Supreme Court today. The evidence showed that before the Auckland Easter races Corin and Walter Leslie Cusack, who lived at Tokirima, near Taumarunui, posted 30s to an Auckland bookmaker to place on a “double.” They registered the letter but as the mail did not leave for a couple of days they became anxious lest the money should not get there in time. They prepared a letter which they gave to a service-driver, signed “Postmaster, Tokirima,” and informing the bookmaker that a registered letter for him from Cusack and Corin lay at the Tokirima Post Office, awaiting dispatch. „ , The double was successful, the pair winning £3OO. The bookmaker failed to pav and handed the document to the police. Corin, when approached by the police, frankly admitted forging the letter. Cusack pleaded not guilty, and now awaits trial. Mr. G. Bell, for the accused Corin, said his client was more stupid than criminal. In view of accused's good character hie Honour said he would let him off lightly.
