TRAMWAYS FOOTBALL

WELLINGTON WINS KOHN SHIELD FORWARD GAME A better pack of forwards enabled the Wellington Tramways team to take the Kohn Shield away from Auckland Tramways at Eden Park yesterday afternoon. The annual match, which was played in fine weather and on a good ground, was not of a very spectacular nature. Play was mostly confined to the forwards, and stoppages were frequent. In the first half play was fairly even, the hard forward work of the visitors being counteracted by better play by the Auckland backs. At halftime there was no score. After the interval the Wellington forwards, who were lasting better, commenced to assert their superiority, and on several occasions the side went close to scoring. Eventually Debrency, the Wellington wingforward, followed through from a loose scrum to score, Nicholls converting. With five points in the lead, Wellington had little difficulty in staving off the Auckland attacks, and the game ended without alteration to the score. Sly, an ex-Wellington representative, ably led the Wellington pack, and he was well supported by Parish and Beecham. Walters, also an ex-repre-sentative player, was very safe at fullback, and Nicholls, centre-threequar-ter, was fairly enterprising. Keary ; and McGrath were the pick of the Auckland forwards, whose individual efforts were spoilt by a disinclination to pack when the occasion demanded it. Rex Hook, the Ponsonby player, and C. E. Gregory, the Marist League player, were the outstanding men in the Auckland back division. Hook, Linfortunately, received an ankle injury early in the game, and later was compelled to retire with an injured

knee. Gregory was really the mainstay of the side, his line-kicking and fine defensive work saving the Auckland line repeatedly. Keane gave a good exhibition behind the scrum. The two wingforwards, Somers (Auckland) and Debrency, gave good exhibitions. Mr. J. Sheppard

was referee. SHIELD PRESENTED The Kohn Shield was presented to the winning Wellington team at a dinner in honour of the visitors given by the Auckland Transport Club last evening. The president, Mr. F. E. de Guerrier, presided over an attendance of 90. Mr. J. A. C. Allum, chairman of the Auckland Transport Board, presented the shield and congratulated the Wellington team. The captain, Mr. H. Sly, responded. The toast of the referee, Mr. J. Sheppard, and the losing team, was proposed by Mr. H. Bowie, who thought that the object of the shield, the promoting of good fellowship among the tramway men of New Zealand, had been achieved. The toast of the Auckland Transport Club was proposed by Mr. H. Leah, of Wellington, who thanked the club on behalf of his team. Replying, Mr. A. E. Ford, general manager of the Auckland Tramways, and past president of the club, said the club was playing an important part in the activities of the service. About £ 49,000 had been expended on behalf of its members in cases of sickness and accident and in other branches of its activities in the last five years. He appreciated the assistance given by the Auckland City Council, which was being continued by the Transport Board. SCHOOLS RUGBY ENDS WANGANUI RETAINS BANNER Press Association WA3JGANUI, Wednesday. The Wellington primary schools Rugby tournament was concluded today in perfect weather before a large crowd. Although both games were won by large margins there was not a dull moment right through, and the standard of play was very high. As the result of today’s play Wanganui retains the championship banner, which it won at Wellington last year. In the opening match Manawatu beat Wairarapa by 12 points to 0. For the winners, Tweedale, Packer (2) and Arnott scored tries, none of which was converted. Manawatu played a much improved game compared with its previous displays, but Wairarapa also did well. The deciding match was that between Wanganui and Wellington, which Wanganui won by 14 points to 0. The winners played brilliantly, but Wellington should have been rewarded with at least one try, for on one occasion a Wellington player got over the line, but an opponent had his hand on the ball when he attempted to touch down. The scorers for Wanganui were Takarangi (2), Bullock and Welsh. Gurney converted one try. Wanganui's victory was received with wild enthusiasm by the large crowd of schoolboy supporters. The visiting teams were well entertained during their stay in Wanganui and will leave tomorrow on their return home. POLAND CUP MATCH (From Our Own Correspondent) SGATEA, Today.
