ARMED BURGLAR

IN HOUSE OF MARCHIONESS I CURZON FIRES SHOTS AT SERVANTS { A burglar, carrying a loaded re- \ volver, held up the butler and other j servants at Grove House, Newmarket, ! England, the residence of the Marchioness Curzon of Kedleston, recently, and escaped after firing several shots. About 2 a.in. the butler heard footsteps downstairs. He aroused six j other manservants, and they went j down to the kitchen. A footman switched on the light, j and found himself looking in the | barrel of a revolver held by a white- ] haired, elderly man, who carried a j torch in his other hand. The footman was ordered to put up j his hands and told to step backward j out of the kitchen. Holding the other I servants at bay, the man then es- ■ caped by the kitchen window and i ran off in the direction of the race- ! course grandstand. { All the servants gave chase, and j the chauffeur had almost caught the j intruder when he wheeled round, j shone the torch in the chauffeur’s j face and tripped him up. Entering a small wood the man ] turned and fired shots in the direc- I tion of the pursuers, who gave up the j chase. Aroused by the disturbance in the ■ house, Lady Curzon came out of her > room, but by this time the intruder - had escaped. Nothing was missing from the house, but it is believed that L this was the first time Lady Curzon had taken her famous jewels to Newmarket. 1 The police, however, do not think : that the burglar was aware of this. . A robbery occurred a few hours 5 earlier at a house in the district, when silver and other articles were stolen.
