MORPETH BEATS WHITTON

In the amateur golf championship today Sloan Morpeth (New Zealand) won a tlirillign match against the Australian open champion. Ivo Whitton. the game going to the forty-second hole, where Morpeth won in brilliant style. The weather was ideal. At the end of the morning round Whitten was 2 up. and in the afternoon he increased his lead to 5 up. Morpeth then responded magnificently, and at the thirty-fifth hole he was 1 up. At the next hole he missed a short putt for a half. The players went on for the third round, and each hole was halved, amid the intense excitement of the spectators. At the forty-second hole Morpeth was on the green with his second. Whitton was in a bunker on the right for two. Morpeth holed out in a par 4, while Whitton. after reaching the green, took two putts. There was spectacular play at the thirty-ninth hole, which has a bottleneck green between two craters. 2SO yards from the tee. Morpeth played into the sand, but got out adroitly on to the green. Tie had a chance to win, but his chip shot was too strong. He then laid the ball a foot from the pin, and got a half. He had a great reception on winning. In the professional championship, Bissett beat Howard, 3 up and .2; Thomson beat Spence, 2 up and 1; James beat McLachlan, 2 up and 1: Stewart beat McMahon, 4 up and 3.
